Sweet red wine comes in a few clear families: the Italian sparkling reds, Lambrusco and Brachetto d'Acqui; fortified Port; and the broad group sold as sweet red blends. All of them have something traditional honey wine lacks, which is tannin, the drying grip that comes from grape skins. Wine Folly notes that ruby Port has plenty of it to balance its sweetness.
Read the label for the sweetness word. On Lambrusco, secco means dry, semisecco off-dry, and amabile or dolce sweet; Wine Folly puts amabile at about 40 to 50 g/L of residual sugar and dolce above 50. Brachetto d'Acqui is sweet as a rule and low in alcohol, at around 5.5% to 6%.
If you drink cherry or blackberry meads, or pyment, start with a Lambrusco amabile or a Brachetto. We have not tasted the bottles below; the notes on each card are the retailer's.
Lambrusco
Fizzy red from Italy, made from dry (secco) to sweet (amabile, dolce), at about 3 to 5 atmospheres of pressure against Champagne's 7. For a sweet bottle, look for amabile or dolce.

How to choose
- Know the sweetness words. Secco is dry, semisecco off-dry, amabile and dolce sweet. Wine Folly uses the same terms for Italian sparkling wine in general. On a sweet red blend, the back label or the retailer's description is usually your only guide.
- Decide how strong you want it. Brachetto d'Acqui sits around 5.5% to 6% alcohol, well under most honey wine. Port is fortified to 19% to 22%, so the pour is smaller: Wine Folly suggests about 3 oz.
- Chill the fizzy ones. Treat Lambrusco and Brachetto like other sparkling wine: Wine Folly suggests 38 to 45°F. Ruby Port is served warmer, at 12 to 16°C (54 to 61°F), according to the Port trade body.
- Pair with chocolate, berries and cheese. Wine Folly rates Brachetto among the best reds with chocolate. The Port trade body pairs ruby reserve and LBV with cheesecake and soft cheeses, and LBV with chocolate cake and mousse.
- Plan for leftovers. An opened ruby Port keeps 8 to 10 days, according to the Port trade body. Sparkling reds go flat much sooner, so open them when you have people to share with.

Frequently asked questions
Is Lambrusco sweet?
It can be dry or sweet. Secco is dry, semisecco off-dry, and amabile and dolce are sweet. Wine Folly puts amabile at about 40 to 50 g/L of residual sugar and dolce above 50.
What is Brachetto d'Acqui?
A sweet, sparkling red wine made only in Piedmont, Italy, with about 5.5% to 6% alcohol. Wine Folly lists maraschino cherry, rose, raspberry and cotton candy among its typical flavors.
Is ruby Port a sweet red wine?
Yes. Grape spirit is added before fermentation finishes, so natural grape sugar stays in the wine and alcohol reaches 19% to 22%. Ruby style keeps the deep color and fruit of a young wine, with enough tannin to balance the sweetness.
What should I serve with sweet red wine?
Chocolate is the classic. Wine Folly suggests Brachetto d'Acqui as possibly the best red for chocolate, and the Port trade body pairs ruby reserve and LBV Port with cheesecake, soft cheeses and chocolate cake.
How long does sweet red wine last once opened?
Port lasts longest: the Port trade body gives 8 to 10 days for an opened ruby. Sparkling reds such as Lambrusco and Brachetto are best finished within a day or two, with a sparkling-wine stopper.
